Hi! I'm Binzy, and I work in the digital space by working on archival and open data initiatives. I work on a variety of projects, though currently I work mainly on MusicBrainz, Open Food Facts and its sister projects, and OpenStreetMap.

Description

I made this Liberapay page as a means to support the work I do. I have plans to continue what I've already been doing, as well as plans to start new endeavours in the Open Data space.

Past Work

• I am a retired staff member of BlueMaxima's Flashpoint, where I archived over 6000 web games and animations, added and corrected metadata on countless curations, established the project's Mastodon and Lemmy pages, and for a brief time, did moderation for the project's Discord server.

• Made over 900 video game prototypes available for play in browser in the Internet Archive's Hidden Palace Prototype Collection.

Current Work

My current work includes the following:

• Adding entries to BookBrainz, where I plan on making entries from my local library.

• In-depth work on improving map quality of Edmonton and Calgary in OpenStreetMap including adding and correcting sidewalks, street features, businesses, and contact methods

• Adding data to the MusicBrainz project, including over 300 artists, and over 500 of both song releases and cover art.

Why I'm Asking for Donations

Working on these projects can be costly. Working on Open Food Facts especially is taxing on the wallet, but I see the effort as worthwhile considering it improves data quality in the project, but also because I feel more correct information would help bring people to Open-Source diet apps over proprietary ones. During my time with the Flashpoint project, I've also bought old computers to retrieve flash files from the web cache.

Working on the projects in general can also be costly in terms of time and resources. In working on Flashpoint, I've put in days worth of effort in curating content as accurately as possible, as well as working on researching how sites operated in the past to ensure nothing gets skipped over, and that what can't be retrieved is at least properly documented. My work on OpenStreetMap has also included surveying locations in person to correct and add information including adding businesses and their operating hours, and doing batches for Open Food Facts can often take hours when it comes to maintaining accuracy of information for a product.

I see this work as voluntary, but also critically important, and would love to continue working on it all for the foreseeable future. Any and all donations are appreciated, and would help me to invest more time and effort into the work I do.
